I had a huge problem with this in class and ended up having to only train it with the instructor. I’d overdo the final roll, every time, and what this gif doesn’t demonstrate is that in a real fight if you’re crazy enough to do this, instead of landing in the figure four lock you just keep rolling and it dislocates the shoulder (and twists up some nasty ligaments/arteries) of your opponent.
For some reason that was what I kept doing and so I had to work with Sensei for like a week to learn to brakefall. Whenever I wouldn’t, he’d do this nifty counter roll that I had the benefit of learning through proximity.
God, I miss my instructors.
